If My people humble themselves and pray...

As many of you know, my church is in something of a transition phase as we are currently without a pastor (and now a music minister as well). I am a part of a Prayer Initiative Team charged with encouraging and challenging the church body with the importance of prayer, interceding particularly for the search committee, the church as a whole, and the man who will be our next pastor.

In addition to providing opportunities to engage in corporate prayer, we have also put together a prayer guide as an aid in intercession, including specific requests and corresponding Scripture. While your church may not be in the same type of transition as we are, I share our prayer guide with you (in something of an abbreviated form) in the hope it may serve to encourage you as you intercede for your church as well.

May we see God's glory in His church!


Pray for the Pastor Search Committee, asking…

For unity, “one in heart and mind,” Acts 4:32

That they will put on the spiritual armor daily, and that God will protect them from the evil one “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Eph. 6:11

For direction, discernment and sensitivity to what is pleasing to God, “we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” Col. 1:9

For godly wisdom in all contacts, decisions and divine appointments, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation,” Eph. 1:17

Energy and excitement, “Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” Rom. 12:11

Pray for our church, asking for…

Unity, that we be “one in heart and mind,” Acts 4:32

Confidence in the good work God will do, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ.” Phil. 1:6

Increased faith, “I do believe; overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:24

Readiness and eagerness for God’s glory, “in the desert prepare the way for the Lord…and the glory of the Lord will be revealed.” Is. 40:3

Humility, surrender, repentance, restoration, “Come near to God, and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded…humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.” James 4:8, 10

That we will not program God nor limit Him. We will trust Him, His timing, His methods, and His leadership to work in ways beyond anything we could think or plan, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen!” Eph. 3:20-21

Patience as we wait on God’s timing, knowing He is good to those who wait on Him, "The Lord is good to the one whose hope is in him," Lam. 3:25

Pray for our next pastor, asking for…

Equipping and empowering of God’s Spirit in his calling and gifting, “our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant” 2 Cor. 3:5-6

Clear direction,“we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” Col. 1:9

Fearless proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, “enable your servant to speak your words with great boldness.” Acts 4:29

Boldness to follow the leadership of the Holy Spirit, “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people…” Josh. 1:6

Ever increasing intimacy with the Lord through prayer and study of the Word, “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Ps. 1:2; “we will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.” Acts 6:4


  1. Oooooh yummy! These are meaty prayer requests. I've copied them all down for my own feasting and to share. Thank you, friend.

  2. Wonderful! We are in the process of finding a new pastor right now. It is not an easy thing to think on, because the thought of something new is wonderful, but the thought of losing a cherished friend (pastor's wife) and a Godly man is heartbreaking. I would like to copy your prayer guide, and share it with a few friends, if that is ok. It is a needed reassurance at this time. Prayer is the only answer to the transition!
